Conclusion of the World Urban Forum in Cairo

Jordan concluded its participation in the 12th session of the World Urban Forum, organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme and hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt, from November 4-8, 2024. The forum saw the participation of over 160 countries from around the world.

Eng. Jomana Attyat, Director General of HUDC, highlighted in the regional session for enhancing comprehensive efforts for housing strategies in the Arab region that Jordan's housing sector is closely linked to the population sector. She pointed out that forced migration has led to increased growth in under-served areas, putting additional pressure on infrastructure, raising demand for rental housing, and causing a sudden surge in housing and land prices beyond the financial capacity of citizens. She also participated in managing a session organized by the Union for the Mediterranean (UFM) and presented a paper during the session, which was prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, titled Urban Heritage and Traditional Building Skills in Southern Mediterranean Countries.

On the sidelines of the forum, a bilateral meeting was held with His Excellency Mr. Irfan, Deputy Executive Director of the program, during which several important matters were discussed, such as updating the national housing strategy, Jordan's report on progress made in implementing the New Urban Agenda, as well as technical support for establishing an urban housing observatory. The forum included the participation of a wide group of specialists and experts, and its sessions addressed challenges and solutions related to urban development, including topics such as housing for the future, the future of cities, climate challenges, technological developments, sustainable urban planning projects, sustainable transport network development, infrastructure improvement, enhancing service quality, increasing green spaces in cities, and initiatives to tackle environmental challenges.
